A Winner!

Averie randomly chose the winner. And if you know Averie at all, you know that's about as random as things get. There were 15 entries for this one.

(My apologies for my "annoying" voice. I should really figure out a way to mute these video posts....)

Congratulations! Email me (blafineart@aim.com) with your desired subject matter. Or just email me your phone number and we'll talk...

It's been a fun month of giveaways. I can't believe October is already over. It's now time to "gird up my loins" for winter. *sigh* Not that winter doesn't have it's redeeming qualities.

It's just so... long.

Here was tonight's beautiful sunset.

Fall hasn't left us entirely yet... Happy Weekend!

Halloweeeeekend

It's always a bit odd when Halloween lands on a Sunday. It's like when your birthday is on a holiday or an inconvenient day of the week, it just sort of stretches on all week.

Not that we're complaining.

It was sunny and nice yesterday, so I had the kids get dressed up for a few pictures. You never know, there could be a blizzard or something later. This is Idaho after all.

I should know better than to have high expectations for these photo shoots. Rylan was in need of a nap, which was my first mistake. But it is what it is. Enjoy:

Our traditional head shot: Not so happy little Rylan.

He wasn't any happier outside. But he did like the pumpkins. Can you tell he's a spider? I didn't realize that it would look so girly with all the purple. Hope he'll forgive me when he's a teenager.

Mason, er, I mean Harry Potter:

Ellorie the "Sharp Tooth" :

Averie as "Cera" the triceratops. (From The Land Before Time)

Mason and Ellorie tried really hard to make Rylan happy.

My favorite picture of the day:

Okay, let's get some all together...

Okay. Close... Lets try a couple more... Ellorie?

Ellorie..

...where are you going?

"Mom, I just want to stand by this cute tree..."

Averie?

"Me too, Mom."

Okay. There you have it.

Happy Halloweekend!

Ready or Not...

...here comes winter.

Custom Painting Giveaway

Just a reminder that the last October giveaway is this Friday! Details HERE. If you want to enter, leave me a comment telling me what you would want your painting to be. One entry per person. I'll choose/announce the winner Friday night at 9:00 pm. Good Luck!

Pumpkin Paintin'

Mason was in charge of the activity for Family Home Evening, and he picked "pumpkin painting" Heaven knows we have enough pumpkins lying around here.

Ellorie was in charge of the song, so she picked it out and lead the music. (Mason also played the piano for the song. "I am a Child of God" from the Children's Songbook. He is getting really good at the piano! He just plays the melody with a few chords, but still. I'm impressed.)

Averie was in charge of the prayers. She gave the opening AND closing prayer. Very nice. I had the lesson this week (service), Rylan had the scripture, so I helped him out on that one. Dad was in charge of the treat. He served hot chocolate in goblets.

The kids were delighted. Mostly because it was past their bedtimes.

And then it was time to paint pumpkins:

Rylan didn't paint, but he enjoyed the commotion.

Averie looks ready for bed, eh? She was pretty excited that she discovered that black+white paint = grey paint.

Mason painted puffles and spirals. ish.

Ellorie is very into dragons at the moment. So of course she painted "Toothless" (from How to Train Your Dragon), and "other" dragons. Too cute.

They want to add more details later. We ran out of time. There just aren't enough hours in the day sometimes. I'm looking forward to Daylight Savings time this weekend. I know it doesn't really make another hour in the day, but it sure feels like it for a while...

Mohawk/Fauxhawk

Mason was in dire need of a haircut. He hates haircuts. So Monday morning as he was eating his breakfast I pulled out the shears and started to.. uh.. shear before he had a chance to protest. That's the kind of mom I am.

His whining sounded not unlike a sheep being sheared as he picked the hair out of his oatmeal. I'm kidding. He was finished with his oatmeal at this point. But he did whine.

I told him to go look in the mirror and he came back with a huge smile.

I told him he can keep it until Halloween. Then we'll have a "proper" haircut. Maybe. I think it's kind of dashing, in a silly sort of way. But don't tell him I said that.

Overheard on the Way to School

The kids were having "science quizzes" on the way to school today.

Mason: "Which type of lizard has spots? A. Leopard Gecko B. Chinese Water Dragon

Bria (neighbor girl): "Ummmm A?"

Mason: "Corrrrrect!"

Mason: "Ellorie's turn. Ellorie, why do leaves fall off the trees in the fall?"

Ellorie: "I know! Because it gets too cold."

Mason: "Incorrect. Bria?"

Bria: "Um, because it gets too windy?"

Mason: "Incorrect. This is why: The leaves have little tubes in them that send water and food to the tree. In the fall all the nutrients go down to the roots and the tree plugs up the little tubes in the leaves so they have nothing left to do except fall off."

Ellorie: "That's what I meant, Mason!"

Mason: "Ellorie, that's 3rd grade science, you couldn't have known that!"

Ellorie: "Oh. Okay."

How to Properly Enjoy Autumn Leaves

Step 1: Rake and/or shovel all the leaves into a huge pile.

Step 2: Run and jump as high and hard as you can into the center of the pile.

Step 3: Grab armfuls of leaves and throw them into the air, and onto your playmates. Laughing and giggling are also required.

Step 4: Smile at the camera to humor Mom.
